Apparently CFL lights have mercury in them; each one with enough to poison 6,000 gallons of water and make it unsafe to drink. I've just learned that we are not supposed to throw them away in the garbage...they have to be taken to a hazardous waste facility. If you break one, clean-up by professionals costs $2000. If you clean it up yourself, you have to air out the room 15 minutes, and do a bunch of other stuff to dispose of the mercury. When you vacuum, you have to dispose of the vacuum bag right away and double bag it. It makes me wonder if I should go back to incandescents.
